How is the Suzuki Method different than other piano methods?

I have been teaching piano in Greenville for 11+ years.  Although I teach both conventional and Suzuki lessons, I love teaching Suzuki best—for the quality results and confidence it develops in students.

Suzuki Method with Young Children

The Suzuki Method builds on a child’s natural learning development.  Babies understand and respond to their mother-tongue long before speaking it.  The Suzuki method encourages parents to surround their children with good, quality classical and current music.  Also, singing, movement, and clapping games help a child develop an innate sense of pitch and beat long before they begin formal lessons.

Most Suzuki students start lessons between the ages of 3-5.  For the first few months, instead of immediately learning to read notes, the child will focus on learning good posture and moving naturally at the piano. We will learn a few familiar tunes by rote and establish a daily habit of listening to the Suzuki repertoire recording to aid in learning the songs.

Suzuki Partnership and Learning Process

The Suzuki Method is a learning partnership between child, parent, and teacher. We call it the Suzuki Triangle.  Suzuki teachers are careful observers of children—we listen to the things they say and watch how each child uniquely learns.  Then we empower the parents to nurture and guide their children through home practice.  My job, as a Suzuki teacher, is to strengthen the parent-child bond and love of music.  I find such joy in my role as a Suzuki teacher— I’ve taught whole families how to play the piano.

Suzuki Class

Most importantly, the Suzuki Method emphasizes CREATIVITY. Playing the piano is not just learning notes on a page (even though reading music is important).  It is an ongoing, inventive process.  Because Suzuki students learn initially completely by ear, picking out melodies and adding chords becomes an easy process within the first year of lessons.  This becomes a springboard to a student creating their own songs and musical compositions.  As the student heads into later Suzuki Book 1, we start building the skills that will soon allow them to play with other singers and musicians at church, school, and their communities.

In my own life, I consider myself lucky to be a teacher AND a former Suzuki student.  Music was a beloved part of my family environment. My Suzuki teacher, Ann Shurtz, and parents gave me plenty of opportunities to develop my skills, creativity, and self-esteem.  I always knew that I wanted to pass on the joy I’d been given.  I’m so happy to be teaching Suzuki Piano Method lessons in Greenville, South Carolina.
